AFZ - BOYCOTT LIST
Boycott Apartheid Israel - The Palestine Poster Project Archive (2013)
Welcome on the introduction to the boycott support list of the Apartheid Free Zone campaign. The list linked at the bottom on this page is a resource in support of the AFZ campaign, launched by BDS Netherlands and in alignment with the international BNC framework.
The list will be updated periodically, so we encourage AFZ members to monitor it frequently to ensure compliance with the campaign’s minimum requirements - especially for the Commercial AFZs. Any future update will be also communicated to the community through our community channels.
This resource will help individuals navigate their boycott choices and ensures that shop owners (both already part of the AFZ community and those onboarding) stay compliant. It focuses on brands found in supermarkets and grocery stores in the Netherlands, offering clear guidance.
N.B: This is a support list to provide anyone who might need it a simpler guidance through the many boycott options available. This list can never be 100% correct, considering the highly dynamic landscape it aims to map. This is why, in the campaign manifesto, we ask to be compliant to the criteria used to scout the must-boycott targets, rather than relying on the recommendations only.
We categorise brands into two groups:
Must Boycott: These brands are mandatory for AFZ compliance, with no exception. They are directly linked to the Israeli occupation. This includes:
BDS targets: Any brand already identified by the BDS movement as complicit in violations of Palestinian rights (e.g., Ahava, SodaStream).
Primary production in Occupied Palestinian Territories: Brands producing or sourcing primarily from illegal settlements or other occupied areas (West Bank, Golan Heights, Jordan Valley) that directly benefit from occupation policies.
Brands profiting from settlement operations: International and/or Israeli brands generating profits from activities in illegal settlements or supporting their infrastructure.
Brands contributing to or benefiting from Israel's apartheid regime: Brands, regardless of geographic origin, whose operations or profits directly sustain or benefit from the apartheid system or other violations of international law as identified by reputable international bodies, including the ICJ.
Should Boycott: These brands are not mandatory but could be boycotted to extend the campaign’s impact. This includes:
Multinational-owned Israeli brands: Brands owned by international corporations where an Israeli branch is present.
High-demand products with limited alternatives: Brands, Israeli and/or international, embedded in technology or sectors where alternatives are either less available or inaccessible for the average consumer.
N.B: The Israeli GS-1 country code (the first three digits in front of a product’s barcode) is still 729, but this alone is not a reliable indicator of a product's connection to unlawful companies. Israeli companies have developed various ways to bypass this recognition, such as using barcodes associated with other countries or packaging their products through subsidiaries abroad. Therefore, it's important to look beyond the barcode and consider the product's origin, brand ownership, and supply chain to ensure compliance with the boycott.
